This spring, Operations Program Coordinator Sarah Bonvallet spent time on the road visiting four partner counties across Minnesota. Each stop offered a firsthand look at how boat wrap collection, transportation, and recycling are taking shape for the 2026 season.
This is Part 1 of a four-part series, starting with Beltrami County, MN.
Getting Out Ahead of the Season
One thing that stood out during the visit was how proactive Beltrami County was in communicating and planning for the upcoming season.
During the visit, the team, led by Jared Davidson, shared how they had spread the word through local radio broadcasts ahead of wrap removal season. That kind of community outreach helps raise awareness and ensures people know where and how to recycle when the time comes.
The program is operating under a signed contract and supports both public and private collection, giving boat owners and businesses multiple accessible ways to participate.
Two Public Sites and a Growing Private Network
Public drop-off is available at two locations in Beltrami County, with public and private volume split roughly 50/50.
One highlight of the visit was the Blackduck transfer site, with its lidded roll-off dumpster that moves material to the main hub efficiently and a small on-site compactor to help manage incoming volume. Some small private businesses are also taking advantage of the public drop-off, which speaks to how accessible the program has become.
On the private side, Ray’s Marine is an active collection partner. The program is looking to onboard more private businesses in the area for collection in 2027. More collection sites means more volume recycled and that is what we are looking for!
Infrastructure in Place and Growing
The visit highlighted the strong infrastructure supporting the program in Beltrami County.
The facility was clean, organized, and offered ample indoor storage space, all of which are important as collection volume grows through the season.
Staff noted that a new baler had recently been acquired, which is expected to strengthen processing capacity going forward.
What’s Next for Beltrami County
With community outreach already underway, a growing collection network, and strong infrastructure in place, Beltrami County is well set up as a program partner this year and in the year’s to come.
