This spring, Operations Program Coordinator Sarah Bonvallet spent time on the road visiting four partner counties across Minnesota. Each stop offered a firsthand look at how boat wrap collection, transportation, and recycling are taking shape for the 2026 season.
This is Part 2 of a four-part series, featuring Hubbard County, where a strong network of private collection partners is driving impressive results
Private Partners Powering the Program
Hubbard County has three private collection partners that are central to the program’s success, accounting for about 75% of all material collected this season.
During the visit, Sarah learned how Josh Holte and Janelle Petersen lead baling and material movement, helping create a consistent operation that keeps materials in circulation throughout the season.
The program is operating under a signed contract with pickups running twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays.
Three Partners, Strong Results
Hubbard County’s private collection network includes Johnson’s on the Water, Park Rapids Marine, and Schmitty’s Dock and Lift. Together, these three partners form the backbone of the county’s collection effort, and their contribution to the program is vital.
One highlight of the visit was Johnson’s on the Water, a well-maintained and organized site with plenty of space to accommodate volume. The site provided a strong example of what an accessible, well-run collection location can look like in practice.
Public drop-off is also available at two locations across the county, giving individual boat owners convenient options to participate in the program.
Consistent Pickups and Strong Season Momentum
With twice-weekly pickups and approximately 7,000 pounds collected so far this season, Hubbard County is on pace for a strong year, with an estimated year-end total of around 9,000 pounds.
That is a meaningful amount of material being kept in circulation. The site also participates in the Trex program, a sign of the team’s broader commitment to keeping materials working harder.
What’s Next for Hubbard County
Based on observations from the visit, Hubbard County appears to have strong momentum. With active partners, consistent pickups, and a team that is genuinely invested in the program’s success, Hubbard County appears well-positioned to help grow this program.
